Caffè Putto

A deliciously un-contemporary coffee roaster with authentic Turin roots.

In what looks like a very normal home in the Turin suburbs we found Caffe Putto. Behind a gate and in a sombre interior we found Maurizio Putto and his small family business. Everything about Caffé Putto feels authentic and traditional in a way that larger brands crave. There was no pretence to Caffe Putto, the office, roaster and shop looked untouched in 50 years, and why change anything when you are making coffee this good.
test 1
The machines, the office and the signs are all testimonies of a great past in coffee roasting and are carefully preserved to be as they were many years ago. Current owner Maurizio Putto grew up playing in the backyard behind the family’s coffee roasting plant (upon which the current factory shop has been built). His knowledge and passion about coffee are extraordinary.
The company story started in 1953 on the present factory site, when the founding  Mr. Putto chose a cherub (an almost inevitable choice since the Italian word for cherub is „putto“) as the brand symbol. Today’s packaging design is practically unchanged and features proudly the now famous cherub icon.
The product names also hint to this symbol with a touch of humour: the top of the range Putto blends are called Celestiale and Paradiso.

Caffé Putto use a slow cycle roasting process („tostatura lenta“) that avoids the coffee going through what they call the „thermal shock“ that happens in large scale, high volume - cheap blend oriented roasters who apply intense heat over short time to increase production.
The heart and pride of the house, still in regular service, is the legendary FIMT  roasting machine (FIMT - Fabbrica Italiana Macchine Tostatrici) with its „unibody“ cast iron construction. According to Maurizio Putto, this design unique to FIMT machines ensures a uniform and constant distribution of heat throughout the roasting drum and process. This in turn results in a perfectly controlled, homogeneous and uniform roasting of coffee beans which is essential for the high quality of the Putto blends. Legend has it that at their factory in Via Azuni in Turin, FIMT used to keep the cast iron blocks for 2 years outside in the chaning weather, and used only those blocks who survived the treatment without a single crack in their roasting machines.

Caffé Putto’s dedication to quality was recognized among others by the Piemonte Region who awarded the company the precious „Piemonte Eccellenza Artigiana“ badge.
