Caffè Damosso

A local, traditional Turin roaster dedicated to coffee craftmanship and freshness.

On an unassuming street corner in an equally unassuming neighbourhood of Turin, an old but wonderfully refurbished coffee roasting machine produces espresso blends that later find their way towards much glitzier surroundings. This place on Corso Cadore in Turin is the café and roasting shop where Vitale Damosso started Torrefazione Gran Brasile in 1946 and where his sons Enzo and Paolo continue the same family business today.
What sets this cafe apart from others, is that roaster sits in the corner of the cafe, as if it were a customer in the shop. It is this that is the beloved hero of the Damosso coffee shop. The antique roasting machine has been painstakingly restored affectionately nicknamed „La birichina“ („the naughty / cheeky girl“). It earned its name apparently because it requires a lot of skill and manual finesse from the man who attempts to control it. But the hard work pays off generously.
For Damosso what matters most is quality and freshness. The Damosso owners prefer to keep a small amount of green coffee beans in stock, and roast small quantities every day (even if this is not what their accountant would recommend) which guarantees a product at the top of its quality.

Damosso have a wide range of single origin Arabica coffees but their most known creations are the two quintessentially Italian blends, both using 100% Arabica coffee, Damosso Royal and Damosso Kaweh.

We were told that the up and coming Turin restaurant Scannabue, known for its creative interpretations of local cuisine, swears by the Damosso coffee blends.
It is little wonder that this relationship exists as both pride themselves in serving an authentic Piedmontese experience.

The reputation for coffee expertise and quality of the Damosso brand is now well established. Since 2004 they have been presented as „Maestri del Gusto“, a distinction awarded by the city of Turin and the Slow Food foundation.
For this reason decided to rename the company, historically known as  Torrefazione Gran Brasile, as it rightfully should: Caffè Damosso.
