San Tommaso 10

Turin
Lavazza
The Café at San Tommaso 10 is where the first Lavazza shop, the “Drogheria Lavazza”, opened over 100 years ago. It is on a little street, with equally historic neighbours that creates an atmosphere that feels a long way from the rest of busy Turin. It feels like a slice of a disappearing and authentic Italy.

There is an intimate warmth to the café, with a restrained feel. Thankfully it focuses on the coffee rather than grand statements about the brand and its history, and there is definitely nothing old about its menu. There is an extensive menu that encourages coffee experimentation (we tried the Espresso Crème with caramel syrup & latte macchiato), and while the staff were proud of the history of the space, they were clearly very able to create a range of great coffee drinks while serving a range of delicious pastries

The café space references the work of Lavazza with innovative chefs like Ferran Adrià for inventing new forms of coffee enjoyment. San Tommaso 10 also has a beautifully designed restaurant space, adorned with world famous Lavazza photography, offering a well curated menu with a wine cellar of over 400 wines.

This café felt like a place for the locals who clearly respect the rich Lavazza history but are not overawed by it. It would have been very surprising for the café to receive anything less than the 3 “coffee beans” rating out of 3 from Gambero Rosso. It surely deserves them.
