Caffè Degli Specchi

Genova
Covim
Just off the Piazza Giacomo Matteotti is Caffè Degli Specchi (which means, not without reason, “Café of the Mirrors”). From the outside it looks like a small and unassuming space but when you get inside this is a small and atmospheric café, with a beautiful vaulted and tiled ceiling, and is surrounded with mirrors making the café seem larger than it really is.

Because of its white ceramics and mirrors Art Nouveau architecture, some locals associate this café with a famous poem “Genova” by local poet Dino Campana who allegedly made reference to this place when he wrote “I am entering a cave of porcelain, sipping levantine coffee”.

The space was bustling and pleasantly full of both tourists and locals, crowding around the bar. A few small tables hid in the shadows towards the back of the café, and there was a compact outside seating area.

A single barista moved between espresso machine and customers with skill, serving perfectly made espresso. Despite the limited space the feeling was not claustrophobic, but close and like a group of good friends.

A great blend from well-known local roaster Covim is turned here in excellent Italian coffee, scoring 2 “coffee beans” score by Gambero Rosso.

Caffè degli Specchi, Salita Pollaiuoli, 43r, 16123 Genova.
