Stratta can be found in the very central Piazza San Carlo, a large famous square not without great cafés - but this café is definitely worth a visit.
 
Stratta opened in 1836 and serves ever since a high quality range of pastry, confectionary and coffee. Its prestigious status at the very top of Turin’s confectionery caterers was confirmed a long time ago, with the Count Cavour ordering their products for official state receptions back in 1860, and Stratta being given the badge of “Fornitori della Real Casa” before Italy’s unification. 

The compact space creates a lively atmosphere with a suave crowd of locals enjoying the very niche coffees. A young and talkative staff clearly had a talent for creating great espresso and understood exactly what makes their coffee on the beautiful retro Faema E61 espresso machine.
 
There was a really lively atmosphere when we were there to enjoy our coffee, the lack of seating meant that everyone was standing, chatting, drinking coffee and some choosing elegant confectionary that was being hand wrapped by the careful staff.
 
The coffee, the interior, the packaging and the clientele all suggested quality without being ostentatious. This café was a great experience in quiet quality. In a move that places them in the vanguard of historical Italian cafés, Stratta have partnered with the Slow Food Foundation and Caffè San Domenico and are offering a rare Harenna Forest coffee from Ethiopia that is a certified Slow Food Presidium product (more about that in our page on Caffè San Domenico). With that, Stratta is not only receiving “2 coffee beans” out of 3 rating from Gambero Rosso, but also supporting the coffee communities at the place of origin.
