Gattullo

Milan
illy
Gattullo is a very busy café on the corner of the very busy Milan street of Piazzale Porta Lodovica.

Walking in from the street, the café is a large open space where the busy Milanese stand and take a coffee and croissant in the morning. Further back is a long room that faces glass cases full of refined pastries and chocolates.

Open in 1961, Gatullo’s fame came from their traditional Milanese Panettone which is an award winning, artisanal creation made in house (reassuringly, their kitchen and ovens are right next the café). Their other pastry, cakes and sweets are also skillfully made in house and are wonderfully displayed. Their expert espressos and cappuccinos, using a classic Illy blend, were recognized with 2 out of 3 “coffee beans” by the Gambero Rosso Bar d’Italia guide.

There is a slight retro feel to this space, that recalls the best of Italy in the 1970s. There is a very classy and classic feel to Gatullo with its extravagant flowers and soft lighting, but there is nothing old or static about this café, it felt active, bright and friendly.

The staff and clientele were all polite and friendly, the whole space was a joy and had the feel of civilised Milan at its best.

Pasticceria Gatullo, Piazzale di Porta Lodovica, 2, 20136 Milan.
