Cambi Café

Genova
La Genovese
To say Cambi Café is a unique jewel in Genova may seem an over-statement, but it isn’t one at all. This place is relatively new (2011), and in many ways a symbol of the re-birth of Genova, uniting its rich traditions with its contemporary aspirations.

Cambi (Marcello Cambi) is the name of the entrepreneur and art expert who created this place and in the process revived two pieces of Genovese history.

To do this justice to this place, it must be called by its full name: Cambi Café - Drogheria Confetteria Vedova Romanengo. Affectionately called “La Vedova” by locals, the latter is a famous historical confectionery brand of Genova who was given here a second lease of life after its original site was closed.

Spread over two floors, Cambi Café is a café, confectionery shop, cocktail bar and restaurant and executes all four perfectly.

The ground floor is the low ceilinged confetteria - caffetteria (confectionery and coffee shop) under the Vedova Romanengo brand, full of local character and local characters. In this bar that appeals to both locals and tourists alike we shared an espresso with three senior Genovese gentlemen telling us of how Genova was in their youth and the story of La Vedova Romanengo.

The coffee here is an award winning blend from local roaster La Genovese that is proudly displayed (available for sale too) in the shop space and clearly present on every table. The quality of the coffee brought Cambi Café a well deserved 2 out of 3 “coffee beans” rating by Gambero Rosso.

A separate, larger side entrance from Vico Falamonica or a small staircase at the back of the ground floor bar, leads you to a larger and more grand bar where we found a solo diner quietly enjoying his newspaper and a Pasta al Pesto Genovese.

It is in the main dining room that the biggest surprise can be found, a breathtaking frescoed and vaulted ceiling, with original paintings from the 1600’s by baroque Genovese painter Bernardo Strozzi, evocative of the faded grandeur of old Genova. This fresco is the second revival that Cambi Café made possible - the paintings had been hidden under a false ceiling by the tennant before for decades.

At any time of day, whether you want a quiet and elegant meal, or to share a friendly espresso, this café has something for you and the friendly staff will surely attend to your every need. An absolute must when in Genova.

Cambi Café & Vedova Romanengo, Vico Falamonica 1r, 16123 Genova.
